Welcome to The Student Bill of Rights
Read the Student Bill of Rights here.
What is this?
This website was created to draft the first truly representative Student Bill of Rights for youth in schools across the United States. The purpose of this project is to create a national student-led mandate for schools to acknowledge and protect the rights of all students in every school. We seek to accomplish this by creating a comprehensive document detailing what students' rights are and how they can be upheld.
This project was created by the National Youth Rights Association (http://www.youthrights.org), and is led by a national committee with representatives from organizations across the United States.
Our goals for the project are listed here.
Instructions
This is a user edited document (at this point) so if you see something that should be changed, you can change it. You don't need to ask permission or submit a change for review or have special credentials. You can simply change it.
However, there is one caveat. If it is a substantive change (beyond changing spelling or grammar) then you must also post in the "discussion" section a description of what change you made and give an explanation. There are many issues at stake here, so it is best we all work them out together so we produce the best finished product we can. Also, feel free to discuss editing changes here (http://www.youthrights.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2088).
To edit a page, just click on the "edit" tab that is on the top of each page. To review what changes have been made to that page, click on the "history" tab. To discuss what changes you've made or what others have done, click on the "discussion" tab.
We have included a help section for the website that will go over the finer points of how to edit and opperate a wiki. This help section is originally taken from Wikipedia.org (http://www.wikipedia.org), the original creator of this technology. Some of it may not be relivent for our project here, but you should find it helpful.
Getting Started
Ok, you like the idea, now what do you do? Well first step is to register with the page. Please Click Here to do that.
Once you are registered, its time to get down to work. Currently there are two parts of the Student Bill of Rights for you to work on and edit. The Preamble and the main Student Bill of Rights. Please read through and begin working on both.
Stages
The drafting of a national Student Bill of Rights is an ambitious project that requires deliberate steps. The following is a summary of the stages of this project:
The first stage is Drafting. We seek to get broad, diverse input from students across the United States to actually draft the Student Bill of Rights. This wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki) page was created as a public work space to allow the most new people to collaborate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collaborative_writing) on making a bill of rights that truly represents all students. This site is the location for the drafting and discussion of what the Student Bill of Rights should actually say.
The second stage is Endorsement. Once a final draft of the Student Bill of Rights has been created, there will be a period during which the public can endorse the document, including individual and organizational endorsements.
The final stage is Promotion. Organizations and individuals across the United States will work to promote the adoption of the Student Bill of Rights as official education policy on the local, state, and national levels by actively working with and advocating to school officials, law-makers, politicians, and others.
Partner Organizations
Several organizations and their memberships have been contacted to join the working group supporting Student Bill of Rights. The following list represents the efforts of hundreds of students and adult allies who are affiliated with dozens of organizations across the United States.
